Information about our last Concert:
Are You Connected?

In what ways do we communicate? What impact has the cell phone had on our relationships? Can you read your partner's thoughts through their body language? Are You Connected? is a compelling evening of dances that probe our relationships to nature, self, and others in our desire for meaningful connections.

THE DANCES:
Conversation Interruptus (premiere, choreographed by Shook and Vallance) is a witty look at the impact of cell phones on our lives. They are a both a blessing and a curse. Our addiction to them threatens our relationships. We stand amidst a vortex of interruptions, dropped connections, and a yearning for truly meaningful connection.

Spirits of the Trees (premiere, choreographed by Lin Shook) is about regeneration and connection to nature. It was inspired by Dessa Kirk's sculptures of part women, part tree goddesses on Chicago's Northerly Island. The dance tells the story of three tree goddesses who are awakened by a wise woman/crone. To survive, each goddess must regenerate her own special power. Spirits of the Trees brims with sculptural connections, breath taking balances and eye-catching movement reflective of the resilience, power, strength and beauty symbolized by trees. Props are designed and created by Lin Shook and well-known fiber artist Danny Mansmith.

Poles Apart, a hysterically funny duet choreographed and performed by Shook and Vallance, is a tongue in cheek commentary on the often day-to-day tug of war between the sexes inspired by Grant Woods painting "American Gothic". An extension pole replaces the pitchfork.

The Body Never Lies views a relationship between a man and a woman through their body language. Do they know what their bodies are telling the other? Did they really mean that? Our bodies speak more clearly than our words. The Body Never Lies celebrates the power of the language of gesture in all of its manifestations. Choreographed and performed by Lin Shook and Harvard Vallance.

Listening to a heartbeat, help from a stranger, divorce, leaving home, really seeing something you've looked at a hundred times, a mother dying... The list is endless with the milestones in life. Garden of Stones, choreographed by Lin Shook, is a journey through those moments when everything lines up, bringing about a shift in consciousness that affects the course of one's life. The dancers travel throughout the space, then look back and mark milestone moments with bits of text, stones and succinctly crafted movement.

Three dancers emerge from a crowd to explore interpretation, communication, and perception through a tightly woven dance of gesture and body language in Into View. Choreography is by Lin Shook. Music is by Indipop artist Sheila Chandra.

Guest artist Harvard Vallance studied dance and performed in Chicago during the 1970's and has continued teaching and performing since moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1981. He studied dance with Shirley Mordine, Nana Shineflug, Joel Hall, Fred Alexson and Victor Clottey. He performed with Nana's Dancemakers of Urban Gateways for several years as well as with the Felix Fibitch Dance Company. Harvard worked with Bill Veeck to present The Instant Replay Ballet, a modern dance piece performed with members of the MoMing Collective for 40,000 fans in Comiskey Park in 1976. In 1999 he founded The Kalamazoo African Dance Company, which has introduced West African dance and hip-hop to thousands throughout Southwestern Michigan.
